Has anyone here tried the Aliens vs Predator CCG? The game is an absolute blast as you take control of one of the factions: Rogues, Cloned Aliens, Marines, Aliens, or Predators. You can even get the Terminator CCG and combine both games and battle it out anyway you like! Tons of scenarios are out there for the game. I have a ton of the cards and they are so worth it! If you can, definitely check out this game!!

My friend (Jypsy on TCO) and I received a shitload of them once, and we decided to play it by opening packs and seeing who got more yellow cards.  It was much more fun this way.

It only had the Premiere set and one expansion set, Resurrection. However, they were about to release one more expansion called Atmostphere right as they stopped making the game. They did release all the images and spoiler text for the cards though. If anyone is interested, I am selling some starters, extra cards, and even some of the very rare promos! We still play the game all the time here. Very deep and a cool "build your own battleground" system!

To me the game ranks right up there with "Highlander" and "Dragon Dice" with games I have been dying to learn but don't know anyone who can teach me.

Sorry, but the rules haven't changed.  Trading, selling, buying are ONLY allowed in the Trading forums.

My apologies as well. I had written that last night I believe before I knew about the 25 posts thing. Hopefully I'll be in that forum soon!  Grin

..."Highlander" ... games I have been dying to learn but don't know anyone who can teach me.
::Raises Hand::
Former Canadian National Champion for Highlander here!

Arguably one of the easiest CCG's to learn. I haven't played a game in... Far too many years (I think it's been over a decade at this point)... But I can still teach folks how to play the game.

One of the best CCG engines hands down. (Would have been licensed a bunch too if Mike hadn't been so unrealistic with what he wanted for the licensing fees. )

We played a fair amount of AvP when it first came out 15 years or so ago it seems.  Decently balanced multi-player. I recall some brokedidity Predator side. Unfortunately my buddies stuff went missing.

That stinks about having them come up missing. Yeah, there are definitely some issues with some of the cards... the Errata is pretty large... but I guess that is true for most of the CCG's I've seen! Still a blast to play though

At gencon I bought a couple of the newer decks, not sure which they were, and i kinda think I get the rules but it is incredibly fuzzy. Is there any way to play online?

Newer game plays pretty much like older game, they just added some additional balancing mechanics, and got to remove a bunch of the stuff that we broke the first time around.

Playing online? Not really sure.

Problem is I had no idea how to play the old game either. I have a couple boxes of one of the early super cheap sets but thats it.

Here's your quick and dirty Highlander tutorial:

Deck Building:
50 card minimum deck size.
Each deck must contain the 15 following cards:
9 Basic Attacks (Upper Left through Lower Right)
6 Basic Blocks (UR, UC, UL, LR, LC, LL)

If you wish, your deck may be larger then 50 cards.
There was a format that forced each deck to be 44 cards, and required an additional 6 cards titled Lean and Mean (Which is also the name of the format)
There was also a format that forced decks to be 100 cards or larger, called big and bad.

Each deck Has a character card, and upto 6 additional cards "prematch slots" (Very similar to raw deal, however the cards are all revealed simultaneously at the start of the game, and all have in game effects.)

The Game:
Default life for characters is 15.
(There are pregame cards that can increase your starting life to 16)
Your maximum handsize is equal to your life.

The turn consists of the following phases:
Defense
Attack
Discard/Draw

During the defense phase, if there is an outstanding attack you can choose whether or not to play a defense against that attack.
Unless there are mitigating circumstances, an attack will do 2 damage by default.
If there are multiple attacks, but a single defense would protect from all the attacks, you only need to play one defense.

During the attack phase you may play one attack if you wish.
You may not play more then one attack unless a card in play would allow you to do so.

Each turn you must play at least 1 card per turn. (Whether that be an attack or a defense.)
During your turn you may play any number of the Edge card type. (Edges typically modify other cards, or allow you to ignore other cards in play)
You may only play one of any of the following card types every turn:
Events
Locations
Situations
Equipment

(IE: If you've played an event, you cannot play an equipment, location or situation.)

At the end of each turn during this discard/draw step:
If you did not play a defense during your turn, you may discard a defense card. (Best said as "I pitch a D" with a southern drawl.)
If you have taken any damage, or gained any life, adjust your maximum hand size as appropriate. If you started the turn with 15 life, but took 5 damage, your maximum handsize would be 10. If you had more then 10 cards in hand, you must discard down to 10.

If you have less then your maximum handsize - you MAY draw upto your maximum handsize.

If drawing through your deck would empty your deck, loose 5 life, reshuffle your discard and continuing drawing to your maximum handsize, and next turn your max handsize will be reduced by 5.
(Depending on your deck, hand, etc. I've gone down to 5 cards in hand, before drawing back to my 15 to hold off exhausting my deck for as long as possible.)

Other rules that need to be known:
1) Each turn you are expected to play at least one card that is not an edge sometime during your turn.
2) You can make an exertion at any time by overturning the top 5 cards of your deck.
3) If you would not be able to play any cards from your hand, you must make an exertion.
4) If you don't have a defense, you may make an exertion to find an applicable defense card.
5) If you don't have an attack, you may make an exertion to find an attack.
6) When play an attack or a defense you can exert 5 cards to make the attack/defense a power blow/power block.
7) a Powerblow will do 4 damage instead of 2. If it is blocked with a power block, but is still blocked, it will deal 2 damage.
Cool If a headshot is not blocked or dodged it will remove your opponents head, and end the game. Blocking it, but not power blocking the headshot will still result in two damage being dealt.
9) If your opponent is playing with Quickening cards, and they lose their head to a headshot, you gain ownership of their quickenings.
10) There can only be 1 location in play at any time, across both players. So if player A has a catwalk in play, and player b plays a submarine base, player a discards his catwalk. (The new location replaces the old one.)
11) If a card would contradict the rules, the card rules.
12) If a player makes a power blow, because it puts them "Off balance" their opponent may respond the following turn by making a hidden attack, where the attack is placed face down. (In defending the hidden attack, this is the only way you can ever play a non-applicable defense to an attack. If you block the hidden incorrectly after it's revealed, you may still exert for a block.)

I'm sure I've missed a few things, but the above is enough to get you playing the game.
To be honest, as a raw deal player, note that when Highlander died the first time, there was a reason that Raw Deal was called "The Highlander Retirement Home."

Actually just got done playing another round of AvP... it really is such a cool game! My Aliens deck got defeated the last two times I played, but this time, I did a great job of breeding alien warriors and was able to totally swarm the Predator for the victory! Love it!
