I enjoyed the horror theme behind Hecatomb, but yes the game was just a magic variant. It did have some cool concepts in it.

Doomtown is an awesome game. The setting is absolutely amazing, and the mechanics of the game are great. Only problem with the game was that at a constructed level the decks got so incredibly broken, that they avoided most of the fun parts of the game, which was getting into shootouts and blasting each other.

Ahhh... fond memories of  Nicodemus Whately strolling around town killing everyone with black magic and a near total immunity to any reprisal. We ended up building no cheatin decks as a result.

I was a demo rep for many years for X-Files (and later Scooby-Doo). X-Files could have been FRIGGIN HUGE if a) Chris Carter hadn't been an anal retentive douche, changing his mind more often than a pimp slaps hoes about what images and ideas to allow to be used (which caused the expansion to be delayed IIRC 5 separate times), and b) if USPC (the manufacturer of the game as well as the printer of Bicycle playing cards) had shelled out a couple bucks to have Gillian Anderson or David Duchovny or even Mitch Pileggi (Skinner) to do a TV commercial.

The second expansion was developed, but was obviously never released.

You really think it could've been big?

Maybe you know something I don't, but I always took its death as due to being lost in the shuffle during the CCG glut from the mid 90s.

Yeah, it came out in the years when everyone was putting out games, but unlike most other "license" games of the time, it was a property that was at the height of its popularity instead of on the decline/stagnant.
