http://espn.go.com/sports/soccer/news/_/id/7377409/ajax-az-alkmaar-dutch-cup-match-halted-fan-charges-player

hopefully either Eredivisie or UEFA come back and force a re-play of the game AND expunge the red card on the goalie, this just goes to show ya how stupid sometimes going EXACTLY By the letter of the law on the game(when you have NO INSTANT REPLAY) can really be... seriously they need a replay official like they do for Rugby... why cant they do that for Soccer...

According to FIFA laws, any form of violent conduct by a player is an offense worth being sent off. But yeah, that interpretation is stupid.

I've actually heard of worse: this Greek dude I talk to named Chris once told me about an instance where a player on one club got sent off for TRIPPING a streaker because it's considered "violent conduct". It was such a ridiculous call that the opposing side was actually arguing with the referee over it!

The interpretation I've always felt best is that players should never attack spectators. But if a spectator runs on the field, they're no longer a spectator but a trespasser, and that they're fair game for anyone actively participating as a player, coach, or game official.

i'm pretty much a fan of this rule being added to EVERY GAME

"If a spectator VOLUNTARILLY goes onto the playing surface/pitch/court then they have waved all rights as a 'specator' and players shall NOT be held responsible for their actions" granted that will never happen but still...

I was interested enough to ask some people I know who follow soccer what they think should be the rule when it comes to a fan running onto the pitch. Here's their responses:

Cal (co-worker of mine): "If a guy's just running onto the field, I think a player should just subdue the idiot. If they run on to attack someone, then a full-out ass-kicking should be permitted."

Ivo (Internet buddy from The Netherlands): "I'd say if a fan runs onto the field, a player should be allowed to stop the guy, then take one or two free shots to get the point across to the fan that he's an idiot."

Jin (College buddy from Japan): "Subdue the trespasser but use as little force as possible. If it happened to me, I'd dodge the guy then put him in a chokehold to make him pass out." (Jin's a judo black belt, so this is realistic for him)

Steve (my landlord): "Keep the fan occupied, whether by force or distraction, then when security comes, back off."

My variant on Brock's idea, and this is for all sports, not just soccer: "If a spectator enters the field of play intentionally, or enters accidentally and does not immediately attempt to leave the field as soon as they are physically able, they are to be treated as participants in the game, and shall be subject to the same rules regarding physical contact as all other participants, with the sole exception that attempts to subdue a spectator on the field shall not result in a penalty to either team."

In other words, you jump onto a football field, and James Harrison lines you up, you best be prepared to take a hit. Hop into a ring, and Manny Pacquiao can pop you in the jaw. Get on the ice somehow, and Dion Phaneuf can ride you into the boards.

Does the NFL really need another reason to give ridiculous fines for hits to the head though? :p
(Aside of that I don't disagree....if I was on that field I'd LEVEL the fool and cite the Monica Seles incident as my justification....)

I get why the rule is there, so the players don't go after a particularly obnoxious fan, that's all well and good.  But that should work both ways, and the OP is right - that was a ridiculous call.

And yeah, if you're dumb enough to put yourself into the playing field, you should get whatever comes your way.  See also: the idiots who'd run into the wrestling ring to get on TV.  I remember one guy who got into the ring next to Savage during the nWo days, when Randy realized he was there, he beat the hell out of the guy, lol

That's happened quite a few times in wrestling. CM Punk told a story in a shoot interview about an incident at St. Andrews Hall in Detroit when he was in a match with Chris Hero where some drunken fans tried taking a swing at him and they ended up starting a brawl.

I can't find the video of it, but it often makes the sports centre top 10...

Quite a number of years ago, a Winnipeg fan enters the field during a friday night CFL game. The opposing team's defence happens to be on the field, and three of them end up laying circle beats on the fan until security shows up (and the police) to drag the guy away. No penalty was levied against the opposing team, and the game went on.
