So, the wife and I are in the early stages of opening our own Tutoring business. The focus will likely be on Math (her specialty) but she can also speak French and wants to hire a History/English/Social Studies tutor to balance out her weaknesses.

This is where I want to pick your brains. We're currently brainstorming names. I think we've decided that naming it with a math pun is out of the question because we don't want to focus solely on math.

We can't really use our last name because it's  "McEachern". I bet half the people on this board wouldn't even pronounce it right...and it'd be a heck of a thing to try and search Google.

My most recent thought is ___________ Professional Tutoring. Short/sweet/to the point! I just need to fill in the blanks.

Thanks in advance for any input. I come to TCO for advice instead of Facebook, because we haven't told all our family and friends yet in case it turns out to not be feasible, etc.

I'm not good at the naming thing, but the one thing I will recommend (since I've been doing it too), find the local town newspapers, find out how much it is to advertise, and put a small ad in said papers, if it's anything like here the ad might be about $300 a month to run, but depending on your rates (I don't know the going rate for tutors), you should be able to re-coup that and as long as one of the people who answers the ad comes back to you, you're golden (your repeat business should be higher then mine, not everyone breaks their computer monthly  Lips Sealed ), the most important thing is get your name out there!!

Oh, we know. We are currently living in British Columbia, but are moving back to our hometown to start this up, where word of mouth will be the cheapest form of advertising and give us that little boost to get going.

She currently works for a tutoring company and the big boss there is letting us know all the details. Marketing is one of the most important things. If people don't know you exist, they can't use your service!

If you can get to or near the schools, maybe some ads/fliers with the rip off the phone number coupons too...very cheap and easy to print and putting them out there might get your foot in the door too!

how big do you want the class to be?

My dad is basically running a small maths tutoring gig with a main focus on 1 to 1 and small groups and between word of mouth from family and friend and students he's basically near fully booked

I'm more of comedy guy, so the name I came up with was "Tutor Your Own Horn," but that's not what you're looking for, so how about "{Name of City} Professional Tutoring."  Of course, I don't know if you need to have the city's permission to use its name in your title.
