So i always like to give some backstory to my posts:

I recently got a job working for the State of New York at Buffalo State College. Its a great job but i hate it. Its a desk/office type job and unfortunatley it took my getting this job to realize i dont like sitting in an office all day ( i was a fire extinguisher and safety equipment technician/inspector before this)

That said, i decided if im gonna be miserable at work, im at leats gonna make it so im a little less miserable at home, and with that, comes the purchase of a new gaming system. Problem is, i dunno which one. Seems like everybody and their mother has a 360 (just about all my friends do) and im a pretty big Halo fan. However, im a little gun shy about the red rings of death, let alone other potential issues. With the PS3, im getting a system that not only has built in blu ray, but also plays plays old ps2 games (i think) which i have a few of.

In additon, im trying desperatley here (because im probably going to buy something tomorow: it IS black friday) to think of what system has which exclusives. For some reason, all i can think of XBOX having is Halo, where as i know PS3 has The Uncharted Series, LBP, MotoStorm, etc.

So, to bring this long waste of typing to a roundabout, whata ya'll reccomend, and does anybody have a comprehensive list of system vs system exclusives?

Thanks

Dave

My personal recommendation, because I have a lot of PS2 games that I want to keep playing, is to scour the interwebs and stores near you for a 60GB PS3. The current generation PS3s cannot play PS2 games, and the other older models have software compatibility, but the original 60GB PS3s have hardware compatibility, and can play almost anything, PS1, 2, or 3. (Note that PS2 Guitar Hero games don't work because you can't plug in the controller, and it doesn't recognize the PS3 guitars.)

The XBox 360, I'm no fan of, personally. Aside from my mild issues with giving money to Microsoft, I'm not into Halo-style games, which is the XBox's bread and butter, they can't play most old games (they're working on old Xbox stuff, but nothing like the way Sony has with their old stuff) and while the online play is slightly better, it costs money. Sony's is free.

In terms of exclusives: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Xbox_360_games
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PlayStation_3_games

Sort by the "Exclusive?" column.

2 big differnces:

360 got Uncle's Bill Dashboard , that will allow you install the games in the HDD, so no the red problem will not appear until you play using the DVD unit, 70% less of hotness , i play about 8 hours continues and i' dont have problems.

PS3 has Blu-ray definition, if you have a big LCD of Plasma TV, you should  use it for view movies in the console  Wink , the ps3 network plays is disgusting, i have played Street Fighter 4 in both console via online playing and i definitely love 360 online play, but on the home playing i keep Ps3 controls to kick my friends A$S!.

In resume:

- If U wanna play with your friends and play shooters, 360
- IF you want to enjoy HD TV or HD Games Ps3

I have both and the PS3 is the vastly superior system. Though I personally have the new PS3 Slim so mine does not play Playstation 2 games. Though that's hardly a problem for me since I donated my PS2 and all of the games I had to charity.

I still have my old PS2, so I use that to play my PS2 games. I mean seriously... I'm a bit of a pack rat when it comes to consoles... Atari 2600, NES, SNES, Genesis, PS1, Dreamcast... but I digress.

For cost purposes PS3 is cheaper in the long run then the X360.

Graphically in the long run the PS3 is going to kick the X360 out of the water. (see uncharted 2)

re: Console exclusives - One of the next things is that Sony has been aggressively pursuing DLC that is only available on the PS3 (Play as the Joker in Batman Arkham Asylum), or is making the DLC free for a short period of time (Brutal Legend Map pack while it released a little bit later on the PS3 then the X360, was free on the PS3 for the first two weeks)

It goes both ways... but the PS3 is quieter, and it works as a total media centre. If I want to watch Raw... I simply watch it on the PS3, and we're done.

If you're a Halo Fan - check out Killzone 2.

Yeah... got my PS3 at the price drop in August... haven't regretted it. Have had a few X360 friends pick up the PS3 too... it's interesting times we live in. Best of luck with your choice tomorrow.

Listen to Toxic - if you've got a normal definition TV - you won't be able to notice the difference graphically.

If you've got the HDTV - Go PS3.

As someone who has both and has played the same games on both systems and with and without HDTV, no matter what you hear or see on TV, X-Box blows away the PS3 in graphics and in terms of game library its still the X-Box

You have no idea what you are talking about. I have both of them hooked up to my HDTV with HDMI cables and the PS3 is clearly the better machine when it comes to visuals.

Well if you are wanting to play games, the 360 has the highest metacritic scores of any system, if you run netflix you don't have to put a disk into the drive to use it. Personally I have the 360, but im also buying a PS3 for the blu-ray, and ps3 specific games(including god of war 3, infamous, uncharted 2, killzone 2, and whatever else that is specific), also the PS3 allows you to access it remotely if you buy the PSP Go you can turn it on remotely and watch any media on it(unless it was bought from the PS store)

Also I hate the PS3 controller the analog sticks suck to use, the 360 controller is much better.  But I am also buying a adapter so that I can use my 360 controller on the PS3 ><

Buy them both. 360 has more games and the ps3 has blue ray and the lack of ring of death. Although I bought my 360 with a service plan.

Although if you are more into online gaming and want to use Wi-Fi I would go with the PS3 since it is built in and you do have to buy a wifi adapter for the 360 (about $100 new)

I love both of my consoles, and have had no problems with either of them (or my WII for that matter)

I could have either console and be perfectly content.  I play the Rock Band and Guitar Hero series, Skate, Burnout, GTA, Halo, and MW2.  The other games I own, Scene It and Lips (I got it for $10, shut it), have (somewhat superior) versions on PS3 in Buzz and Singstar.

Beyond Halo, every game I have could be on either system.  That said, with MW2 and other shooters, Halo isn't exactly necessary, even though I prefer it to other shooter options.

I'd go with whatever more friends have.

If I had to pick one, I'd go with the PS3 simply because it's a Blu-Ray player, but if I could afford it, I'd plunk down the cash for both. They're both excellent systems with very little difference between them.

The PS3 is great for the Blueray Player.  you can bye a stand alone player for 60-80 dollars that works great.  You can get a 360 for 200 and that is everything.  You have great games on both but I perfer the Xbox Live online play for Modern Warfare 2, Marvel vs Capcom 2, Smackdown vs Raw.  With the PLaystation the only really good game you get that is not on 360 is God of War 3.  That is my thoughts on the deal.

Yeah PS3 exclusives totally stand their own ground, especially in the last 2 years:

Uncharted
Uncharted 2
Killzone 2
Little Big Planet
Heavy Rain
Heavenly Sword
Disgea Absence of Justice
Infamous
Metal Gear Solid Guns of the Patriots

Those are just the ones I can read from my desk from my stack of 256 PS3 games. The amazingness could go on for awhile for PS3 games. You don't have to have a gold account to use Netflix, you actually have a system with a web browser, you have wi-fi built into the system instead of paying almost $100 for an antenna that some people had a hard time figuring out. The controllers charge via the system, you didn't have to buy freakin batteries or a re-charge kit. Online while not as good is free, game sharing with your friends is EPIC WIN, Blu-Ray is amazing, especially compared to the HD DVD format which yes died but you had to pay through the nose for the player. PS3 games are on Blu-Ray discs which are a HELL of a lot more scratch resistant then 360 dvd games. I could rant about the far greater risk of a failure rate on the 360 in comparison but I'll just say that when current statistics show more then 50% are STILL failing, it's time to MOVE ON! Yes, they cover it, because they HAVE to, it's not like they;re doing out of the kindness of thier hearts! And the 360 points you use to buy stuff with is lame. You spend points on something you want then you have a weird arse point amount left over for nothing you are really interested in. And the PS3 is such a better multimedia oriented system as Goth has said. Also, putting in a bigger HD for your ps3 is SO much cheaper compared to the 360! You just go buy a 2.5" SATA laptop HD and pop that baby in and it's pretty much good to go. People nag on the PS3 for taking away Backwards Compatibility, UMMM have you seen the last time Microsoft updated thier list?! And now it's not gonna be a huge issue anyway considering in the near future we are supposed to have downloadable PS2 and DREAMCAST titles on PSN...I know that isn't as good but hey it's still pretty sweet. And the PSN library for classic games that would normally have you paying through the nose to get (FF7, Suikoden for example) is such a godsend. The system runs SO much quieter, the 360 sounds like a tiny ape going into labor. On the older PS3 consoles you can run fully supported Linnux, if you're into that kinda thing, which is just a cool option...I could go on and on for days but I thinK I'm good for the time being LOL

I like how everyone always says "well it cost $100 more to buy a WiFi for XBox". Up intill 6 months ago didn't the PS3 cost like $100-$300 (depending on when and what version you bought it) more then the normal XBox anyways? And you can buy the arcade XBox for $100 less then the PS3 right now.

Until the PS3 Pricedrop in August, I didn't own either a PS3 or an Xbox.

Yes, you can buy an Arcade for $100.
Then add up the costs to be able to play anything you want:
$100 for Xbox Wifi adaptor
Plus Xbox Live charges
Plus however much a HD is to be able to enjoy the games.

Now you've got a system that will possibly Red Ring (Every Xbox Owner that I know personally has had their system Red Ring)

For the exact same price as a PS3, but still doesn't have all the features as a PS3.

Keep in mind the original poster has asked
So i always like to give some backstory to my posts:

So this was asked after the PS3 Price Drop.

Locally in my shops it's worked all the stores tend to regularly sell out of their PS3's (and they're able to restock within a week) while their Xbox 360's just sit there.

XBox doesn't have Blu-ray we get it, if I'm buying a counsel I'm buying one that will have games I enjoy more not just because it has a blu-ray player in it. I don't really care how much extra features they can cram into it, if it doesn't have the games I want to play then what do I care if it has a blu-ray or an X-ray or a laser beam ray? I always like that when people ask XBox or PS3 the most common reason for a PS3 is it has a blu-ray and XBox red rings. You know it's not PS3 has better games or anything like that it's "nah-nah-nah-nah boo boo we have a blu-ray and you don't!"

I was just saying I hate the fact that everyone brings up that "XBox doesn't have WiFi, you have to spend $100 on it" when for most of the history of the PS3 it cost $200+ more then the XBox anyways. I just think it's kind of ironic that everyone says you have to spend so much more on the XBox to get everything when the PS3 debuted with a $600 price tag and the "cheaper" version (not cheaper then the XBox just cheaper then the other PS3) also lacked WiFi. And only NOW is it the same price (and that only took what 5 versions later).

Yes they are both the same price now. Yes the PS3 has a blu-ray player. But the bottom line is what system has the games you want to play more. If a blu-ray player is the differance for someone then that's fine, but I'm not going to buy a system that has less games I'm interested in just because it has a blu-ray player. I just hate when people bring up a DVD player when someone is trying to decide what gaming system they should buy.

And that's because most people already have a XBox. It isn't only until the price drop that people started looking at buying a PS3.

Fair enough. I answer from the following perspective:

1) 3 of my friends have all had their X360's Brick. One of my friends who hasn't had it brick is living in fear of when his is going to go. Hearing my friend almost cry because he can't afford to buy a new console to replace his Xbox was rough. I'd rather not have to go through with that again.

2) I play games like God of War, and Uncharted. I can't stand Halo. Outside of that, both consoles have Virtua Fighter, Soul Calibur, Rock Band, and Tekken. I really don't enjoy FPS games, which is the majority of what X360's premiere titles are about. Both consoles have Brutal Legend, which I absolutely love, but the PS3 had the first DLC for the game for free. Batman Arkham Asylum (amazing game) has exclusive DLC on the PS3.

3) I didn't buy a next gen console until I had an HDTV. At that point, it's in my living room. My cable modem is in my office upstairs. While I can, and have run 100 feet of ethernet through my house, it also means that the ethernet would be crossing the stairs. My girlfriend is a clutz, and not properly wiring the ethernet and burying it/ running it through walls / ceiling, means that having wireless is important to me. So not having to shell out to pick up a wireless adaptor and being able to go online right out of the box meant alot to me.

4) I waited to get a PS3 until the price drop hit. At which point I snagged a 160gig PS3 for 399 that came bundled with Uncharted 1, Infamous, and Killzone 2. I have yet to see an X360 as aggressively bundled as the PS3 was.

5) I actually use the PS3 as a full media center. When I download any content, I watch it via my PS3. While I *COULD* have bought a TV tuner card, and hooked up my PC/Laptop (my HDTV has a PC monitor input) the quality coming through the PS3's HDMI is better then the monitor input. The PS3 has actually replaced my DVD player as well. Additionally for Optimal sound, the PS3 allows me to wire it into my receiver as well as my TV, so for when playing things like rock band, it gives better sound. (Complicated story as to why the TV's not hooked up to the receiver). We actually use the PS3 to play MP3's, and as a central hub for music in the house.

6) I like the PS3 controller, I don't like, and don't feel comfortable with the Xbox 360 controller. (Despite the fact that I actually like the Dreamcast Controllers, and they are similar)

I thought long and hard about which console to buy. I researched it with friends who had both consoles. Including one friend who's the ASM at an Electronics Boutique (aka Game Stop). One of my friends who currently own X360s, and due to kids etc, can't afford to buy ANOTHER next gen console have actually told me they now regret getting the X360, and not waiting for the PS3.

So forgive me for going on - but sometimes there's more to it then "what system exclusives do you want to play?"

If you look online and know your way around a computer a bit its like $30 to fix a RROD problem...

As much as as they're really good friends of mine, my buddy and his wife... they aren't with the skills to get it fixed, and I'm not going to fly to Oregon to help them.

Xbox has full media integration, too.

I can watch any movies I download, listen to music, and view pictures with like... 2 or 3 simple clicks on my computer.  I can stream Netflix, and watch the shows with friends online if I want to.

We don't have Bluray, but having watched a few on my roommate's PS3... I'm not missing anything.  The picture is good, but playing DVDs through my Xbox with the upscaling is perfectly fine for me, and much cheaper in the long run.
