I've decided to run a Premiere starter-only round-robin tournament. However, I'm not using true Premier starters.

The Premiere superstars have been given a slight upgrade for this tournament. Their three starter deck foils have been replaced with the SS3 Rumble Pack variants. In Mankind's case, this eliminated him from the tournament, as he was not reprinted in SS3 Rumble packs. However, the other 57 cards in each superstar's arsenal accurately reflects their Premiere starter deck, courtesy of CI's deck lists.

So six WWE superstars battle it out, over fifteen matches, to determine... well, who can get the lucky draws. Early matches indicate a long and sometimes humorous tournament, with such legendary cards as Hmmmm... , Don't Think Too Hard, and Not Yet seeing plenty of use.

My pre-tourney favorite: While Rocky did get an excellent upgrade in the TB Rock Bottom (It's the only Trademark in the six decks), I believe that hand size will carry the day. So I chose the classic 10/3 HHH deck.

Scoring Format:
Pinfall Win: 10 Points, Countout Win: 5 Points, Draw: 1 Point each, Countout Loss, -3 Points, Pinfall Loss, -7 Points.

Early matches (first three)

Chris Jericho got off to a rapid start against the Rock (Including a full Lionsault), but had to survive a late Rock comeback attempt and was happy to leave the match with a Countout win. Jericho tried to win the match by pinfall, refusing two seperate countouts earlier in the match, but Rocky's ability made sure Y2J could not finish him. Rocky's handsize cost him here, especially when Y2J hit the table against an empty Rock hand.

Jericho COR Rock (60-26 F)

Undertaker and Kane brawled and fought all over the place in their match, but UT scored a Clothesline-Chokeslam combo, in full, to set up the Pinfall victory over his brother and rival. UT's ability was the match breaker here, but Kane's ability had the match in doubt until the final move hit.

Undertaker PIN Kane (46-33 F)

HHH took Jericho one better in annihalating the Rock, jumping out to a hard early lead, hitting I Am The Game to end Rock's hand, and ultimately keeping the Rock below his "magical" 4F mark. And yes, Irish Whip-Leaping Knee saw action in one of my matches for the first time in years. HHH's hand size gave him an early blitz, and drawing a couple of Ankle Locks that went through early on truly finished Rock's comeback hopes.

HHH PIN Rock (44-3 F)

Coming soon: Kane-Jericho, Taker-HHH, and Jericho-Austin (The tournament is set so no single superstar has two matches in a row.)

Awesome! It's nostalgic to read something like this... Been caught with Premiere-itis myself as well. Have a few deck lists in the deck section.

Matches 4-6

Match 4 saw Chris Jericho (2-0, 17 points) pull out a nailbiting pinfall win over Kane (0-2, -14 points). Jericho pulled off one of the more amazing sequences I've seen early in the match:

Y2J (Draw 5) - Ability (discard crappy move, Kane's only card in hand is Sits Up, with Kane at 10F) - Irish Whip + Cross Body Block for 12, taken in full - repeat IW + CBB, Step Aside flipped at 6.

Even with this sudden surge, Kane slowly fought back, wearing down Y2J with ability and occasional moves. Hitting two straight Recoveries on one turn definitely helped. However, Jericho stayed ahead long enough to finish the match with his last four cards:

Not Yet (Shuffle back Knee To The Gut, draw Chin Lock and Bear Hug) - Chin Lock to reduce Kane to hs last card in the Arsenal - Bear Hug to pin Kane.

(Jericho PIN Kane, 42-34)

Match 5 featured two superstars coming off of opening Pinfall victories. Only one could be 2-0, and the Undertaker (2-0, 20 points) did so in impressive fashion, flipping the script on HHH (1-1, 3 points). The man from the Dark Side just pummelled HHH, and managed to pull enough early reversals and late stun value to keep the beatings coming. Chokeslam (only for 6, but the 2SV helped UT's hand), Flying Clothesline (for all 18, of course), and high impact grapples kept HHH's strike reversals stuck in his hand, and kept his Arsenal on the move to the Ringside pile.

HHH did not fare as badly as his first opponent, but much like the Rock, he never found himself in a position to do too much. Losing a lot of moves to early overturned reversals never helps either.

(Undertaker PIN HHH, 61-22)

Our final match of this session saw Stone Cold's debut, against an impressive Chris Jericho. Jericho's early tournament dominance was quickly ended, as Austin hit early moves, stripped Jericho's hand with Ankle Locks, and even nailed the Lou Thesz Press as a reversal, to Jericho's dreaded IW-CBB combo. Austin's hand did end up going to zero, but Jericho never was able to gain any momentum or hand size.

Jericho drops to 2-1, 8 points, while Austin is now 1-0, 10 points

(Austin PIN Jericho, 51-10)

Since the Finns have decided to roll over and play dead, I'll get an early start to the third session.

Match 7: The Rock (1-2, 0 pts.) gets his first win of the tournament, defeating Kane (0-3, -21 pts.) in what will go down as one of the most boring, unluckiest matches in Raw Deal history. You would think that a starter deck should have at least a basic beatdown ability... well, Kane disagrees with you.

Kane's hand by the end of the match was a 15 cards... and other than the 1F reversals, every card was 4F or bigger. Which is a problem when he's stuck at 3F for the whole match. Both superstars drew the right reversals early, and it took nearly a half-dozen turns for either wrestler to land a move. The Rock, with the help of a couple Whaddya Got's, slowly built his Fortitude through submissions and an Irish Whip-assisted Punch. The end of the match came by... the dreaded Arm Bar. Although Rock felt a little dumb upon realizing that the TB Rock Bottom only costs 25F as a maneuver... which he had before the last move. Oh well, it's a Pin either way.

(Rock PIN Kane, 28-3)

Match 8: Stone Cold (2-0, 20 pts) survived a long and painful battle, finally getting the Pinfall victory over an exhausted, handless, and Arsenal-less HHH (1-2, -4 pts). Neither superstar was able to hit their trademark and had to depend on the Arsenal's lesser moves to carry them to victory. Early reversals helped Austin jump to a quick lead, but HHH was stubborn, refusing to just roll over. However, a late HHH rally ran out of steam, and Austin was able to Roll Out Of The Ring into his choice of final moves: Vertical Suplex (which hit for the pin) or Bear Hug.

(Stone Cold PIN HHH, 38-32)

Match 9: Chris Jericho (3-1, 18 pts) was able to lock down the Undertaker (2-1, 13 pts) and came away with a relatively easy Pinfall victory. Neither superstar was able to string together a major set of moves, but Jericho's dreaded IW-CBB combo proved to be most of the difference, as was the lack of overturned reversals by UT during the match. This match had its moments, including an early dilemma for Y2J off that card. Holding four cards in his own hand, and seeing UT's hand with four cards, Jericho made the decision to wipe out Taker's hand. It paid off in the end, as UT was unable to recover his larger moves from the Ringsile pile, nor was he able to hit multiple moves in one turn. Even a late UT Sits Up went to waste, with Taker not able to land any real damage on his turn.

(Jericho PIN Undertaker, 29-18)

Session 4 will begin tomorrow, and Session 5 will either be tomorrow afternoon or Sunday morning.

Session 4:

Stone Cold (2-0, 20 pts) vs Kane (0-3, -21 pts)
Rock (1-2, 0 pts) vs Undertaker (2-1, 13 pts)

Session 5:

Austin vs Undertaker

Jericho was such a great play back then.  His ability made it easier for newer players, as less cards always make a game easier to learn, and he was just a limiting machine.

Match 10: Stone Cold (3-0 30 pts) continues his reign over the other Premiere superstars, annihilating Kane (0-4, -28 pts) in this match. Kane's bad luck struck again, as he remained firmly stuck on 0F, then 3F, watching his hand full of 4F+ cards continue to grow. If not for his ability, Austin would have barely been scratched in this match.

Austin relentlessly landed move after move on Kane, including his TB Lou Thesz Press. Kane, meanwhile, would finally draw a move... and be stymied by yet another of Austin's well-timed reversals. As a result, Stone Cold still controls his own destiny, and Kane is hoping to finally break through in his last match against HHH.

(Austin PIN Kane, 48-3)

Match 11: The Undertaker (3-1, 23 pts) one-upped Austin, leaving The Rock (1-3, -7 pts) laying in a broken heap. Slow starts by both superstars kept the Rock in the match for the first few turns... until Taker landed a couple of moves. His hand, filled with larger moves, then beat the Rock's Arsenal six feet under, and then some. The finish was classic UT, beginning with a Sits Up reversal, and ending with the Chokeslam and a pair of Back Breakers.

Rocky had early hope, drawing a decent set of reversals. But his moves stayed hidden in the deck, Taker forced his red hand to turn slowly blue, and by the time any yellow showed up, Taker was ready for it.

Both superstars have one match left... against Austin. Taker will be playing for 1st place, while Rock will be playing for pride... and maybe his life by the end.

(Undertaker PIN Rock, 58-4)

Match 12: What a finish to this session. What looked like a third consecutive rout turned into a heart stopper, as HHH (2-2, 6 pts) is able to finally get a Pinfall win over Chris Jericho (3-2, 11 pts).

HHH's hand size gave him a huge edge early on, as he rushed out to a massive lead over an unusually slow-starting Y2J. But he could not get the quick finish, and over the span of three turns, Jericho nailed one IW-CBB (and had a second CBB stuck in his hand, waiting in vain for the Irish Whip), Y2J (Draw 5 against a handless HHH), and just enough moves to put the match into question. But HHH, helped by a timely Roll Out Of The Ring, was able to nail TB I Am The Game, and draw his final move.

HHH hopes to finish over .500 with a win over Kane in his last match, while Chris Jericho finishes 3-2, and will be either third or fourth, depending on the HHH-Kane result.

(HHH PIN Jericho, 43-26)

Match 13: Stone Cold (4-0, 40 pts) clinches the Premiere championship with a covincing Pinfall victory over the Undertaker (3-2, 16 points). What looked like a close match early went south for UT when Austin landed his TB Lou Thesz Press, and UT could not draw away from Austin's ready reversals.

Stone Cold still has one more match remaining, against the Rock, while Taker finishes in second place.

(Austin PIN Undertaker, 44-13)

Match 14: Our first shutout of the tournament, as Kane's (0-5, -35 pts) horrific luck continues against HHH (3-2, 16 pts). Both superstars started slowly, and Kane was holding a small advantage due to his ability. Then HHH pulled off this turn:

Punch for 3, Running Elbow Smash for 6, Jockeyed Gut Buster for 5, another for 5, Whipped Running Elbow Smash for 11, Running Elbow Smash for 6, Kane fnally overturns a reversal on 6.

Kane's Arsenal expectancy was drastically shortened by this sequence, and it only took a few more turns for HHH to finish off the Pinfall victory. HHH finishes in third place, due to his earlier loss to UT. Kane finishes dead last, and is now looking for some poor soul(s) to burn to a crisp.

(HHH PIN Kane, 40-0)

Match 15: Our "main event" for the tournament saw Stone Cold (5-0, 45 pts) manage to hold off a late rally by the Rock (1-4, -10 pts), and Austin finishes "perfect" with the Countout victory. Even landing TB Lou Thesz + Austin Elbow Smash early on was not enough to give Austin the 1-2-3, and the Rock was able to pick up enough F late in the match to make a Pinfall attempt risky at best.

Austin had already clinched the championship earlier in this session, while the Rock finishes in fifth.

(Austin COR Rock, 62-19)

Final Standings:

Austin: 5-0, 45
Undertaker: 3-2, 16
HHH: 3-2, 16
Jericho: 3-2, 11
Rock: 1-4, -10
Kane: 0-5, -35

Coming soon:

Fully Loaded "starter" tournament. With only Angle, Benoit, and Guerrero in Rumble Packs, this tourney will be a double round-robin. Six matches total, each superstar in four matches. And I may do a triple threat at the end.

Backlash "starter" tournament will be quite different. I'm still working out the kinks, but each singles star will get their tag team deck, appropriately modified. (Ex: Edge will get E&C's starter, without the E&C foil and Christian's foil. They'll be replaced by his premium rares from the set, Sodas Rule! and Million Dollar Smile. There are no tag cards in the starter, so the SS-Specific fix should be all that is needed) Six superstars in the Backlash tournament, so they'll use the same format as the Premiere tournament.

I just finished rebuilding the starters... It'll all be in the opening hands. Anyone who gets a Kane-like draw will usually lose. Fast. But I'm expecting less of those hands with these decks and hand sizes.

My prediction: Eddie-Benoit will determine 1st and 2nd, Angle will pull up the rear. But anything can happen...

Fully Loaded Tournament

Match 1: Eddie Guerrero gets this tournament off to an interesting start, defeating Kurt Angle by Pinfall. However, this match did not end in a flurry of High Risk moves, as many expected. Eddie won this match through an obscure and long-unseen method: Small Package X 3.

Kurt Angle drew enough early reversals to keep Eddie off the top, and when he played a Defensive Cover, it looked like Eddie might never get off the ground. But Eddie had his "secret weapon" soon ready to go: From The Top Rope. But the Defensive Cover kept the damage from Eddie's top rope assault to a minimum. Kurt's downfall was his early start, as he played nearly all his deck's reversals, and could not overturn anything to Eddie's match winning combo.

(Guerrero PIN Angle, 42-15)

Match 2: Well, this was fun. Kurt Angle manages to pull off an exciting comeback, defeating Chris Benoit by Pinfall in a match that seemed lost only a few turns earlier.

Benoit was able to get the relatively quick start, hitting Angle with a flurry of moves that pushed him to 30 Fortitude. He would go no further, and could only take Angle's quick spurts of moves, helped by timely actions. Angle's three I's were not completed, but he did manage to land Intensity and Integrity, along with multiple drawing Actions. With his hand constantly being replenished, and his moves doing more damage, Angle was able to drain Benoit's Arsenal quickly. A Choke Hold (doing Cool was Angle's final move.

(Angle PIN Benoit, 35-30)

Match 3: THIS was an asskicking. Chris Benoit's first turn: Kick for 6, Hammerlock for 5, Series of Suplexes for 9, discard to repeat SoS for 10, Foot Stomp for 13. All Benoit needed after that was an Elbow to the Face, and a Throw Into The Corner Turnbuckle + Monkey Flip to secure the Pinfall win over Eddie Guerrero. Eddie drew a nearly Kane-like hand, with his only two moves of the match both reversed from Benoit's hand.

(Benoit PIN Guerrero, 32-0)

All three superstars finish the first session at 1-1, with three points each. Session 2, or possibly even a triple threat, will determine the Fully Loaded champion.

Match 4: Eddie Guerrero (2-1, 13 pts) once again Pins Kurt Angle (1-2, -4 pts) with Small Package X 3, with the match going along the same road as their first round. Moves reduced by Defensive Cover could not stop From The Top Rope, and Angle's small reversal base could not stop the Small Package Combo of Mild Discomfort and Pinning.

Both superstars face Chris Benoit to finish. Eddie hopes to reverse his luck from the first match, while Angle hopes to repeat his.

(Guerrero PIN Angle, 33-14)

Match 5: Kurt Angle (2-2, 6 pts) gave Chris Benoit (1-2, -4 pts) a taste of his own medicine, beating Benoit all over the arena and finally getting the Pinfall victory. Much like Benoit shut out Eddie Guerrero earlier, Angle shut out Benoit. Having a hand full of non-0F cards never helps either.

Angle's keys to total victory were his initial draw (he drew FIVE reversals in an initial six card hand), and Benoit's inability to draw 0F maneuvers after his opening hand's three were all reversed by Angle.

Benoit will have to get over this loss quickly, as a victory over Eddie Guerrero will throw these three superstars into an elimination triple threat to determine the final victor.

(Angle PIN Benoit, 41-0)

Match 6: Chris Benoit (1-3, -11 pts) didn't recover. Eddie Guerrero (3-1, 23 pts) didn't quite pull off the shutout, but he did win his third straight match by Pinfall off of the SPCoMDaP. This is also known as Small Package X 3. This time, Eddie even hit his Shooting Star Press on the way to a massive beatdown of Benoit.

(Guerrero PIN Benoit, 58-3)

After this final match, the standings are:

Eddie Guerrero: 3-1, 23 pts, Fully Loaded Champion (good prediction Jarek)
Kurt Angle: 2-2, 6 pts
Chris Benoit: 1-3, -11 pts

Predictions: Matt Hardy will fly to victory, with the other superstars scrambling for second through fifth.
Keys: Matt's high flying, D-Von's ability, Buh-Buh Ray's moves, Christian's ability. Edge will always draw 6, so his biggest advantage will be nonexistent.

Backlash "starter" Tournament:

Session 1

Match 1: D-Von Dudley comes back from a huge early gap to defeat Edge by Pinfall. Edge landed a great starting hand, and was able to keep D-Von off the board while building his own momentum. But Edge's hand eventually ran out of steam, and D-Von's moves started to string together. The "decision point" of the match was Edge's downfall, as he tried to finish D-Von, but his last move in hand, a Running Lariat, was reversed by Doin' The D-Von. The 2 Damage didn't hurt too badly, but the string of moves D-Von landed on his next turn quickly pushed Edge to his end.

(D-Von PIN Edge, 34-38) (First winner to have less Fortitude than his opponent)

Match 2: Matt Hardy and Buh-Buh Ray Dudley left it all in the ring in this dramatic match, which Matt Hardy won by Pinfall. What looked like an easy win for Hardy was turned upside down in one long, dangerous turn for Buh-Buh Ray, culminating in his ability working all too well after a well-timed Catatonic Stare (He drew 8 at the start, and did not have to discard after playing Catatonic). But Matt would not die, and the match came down to his last card in his Arsenal, with only a Flying Leg Scissors and a Break The Hold in his hand. One Leg Sweep + Flying Head Scissors combo later, Matt pulled off the close, dramatic win.

(Matt Hardy PIN Buh-Buh Ray, 42-56) (Matt's ability only got him six cards back, an Adrenaline Rush and some well-timed overturns saved him)

With only Christian left to play, these early matches have been a nice suprise on the dramatic side.

Session 2

Match 3: D-Von Dudley (2-0, 20 pts) defeated Christian (0-1, -7 pts) by Pinfall. While Christian's ability worked on any cards that D-Von played, he could not shut down D-Von's ability. D-Von was able to draw after every maneuver, and more often than not pulled a follow-up move. Neither superstar pulled reversals, and as a result, nearly every move had to be reversed on overturn. Christian could not maintain that pace for long.

(D-Von PIN Christian, 53-24)

Match 4: Matt Hardy (2-0, 20 pts) used his ability to defeat Edge (0-2, -14 pts) by Pinfall. Even a strong start by Edge (20+ F before Matt Hardy had any) meant nothing once Matt went aerial. When you can recover over a quarter of your arsenal on one High Risk move (6 cards for ability + 10 cards for TB Put It All On The Line), you're very hard to beat. Edge did have a small chance late, but he ran out of maneuvers, Arsenal, and eventually was pinned not by a flashy High Risk, but by a simple Backhand Slap.

Session 3 wil not be seen until Friday afternoon at the earliest, due to school.

Backlash should finish either late Friday or early Saturday... still debating on if booster superstars should be eligible for Mania. And if so, which starter should I use?

If you decide to use booster superstars from Mania i would go with Raven. I used him for a long time at my local tournament and had great success with him. Have a possible deck list for him too if you need one.

A: Raven was not in SS3's Rumble Packs, so he's out. APA isn't a single wrestler, and was not in a Rumble Pack either. Regal and Spike would be the two booster superstars used.

B: I'm using the wrestlers' original starters, with their starter foils changed to the SS3 reprints. However, Regal and Spike never had starter decks. I'm leaning towards giving Spike RVD's starter, and Regal would get either Booker's or Big Show's starter. With the proper changes, of course.

Session 3:

Match 5: Christian (1-1, 3 pts) slowly wore down Buh-Buh Ray Dudley (0-2, -14 pts), and eventually won the match by Pinfall. The turning point was Buh-Buh Ray's attempt to land one large strike on Christian, at 15F. Bubba drew 13 for his ability, but failed to draw Catatonic Stare, which would have saved his hand. His first move, Big Splash In The Corner, was reversed on overturn (after Christian took 5), and the other eleven cards in his hand soon found themselves in the Ringside Pile. After that, all it took were a couple high-impact moves (Airplane Spin and Tiger Bomb), and Buh-Buh Ray's Arsenal was quickly bare. The final move? Scoop Slam.

(Christian PIN Buh-Buh Ray, 40-29)

Match 6: Drama. D-Von Dudley (3-0, 30 pts), down to his last maneuver in hand (and with no Arsenal left), hits Matt Hardy (2-1, 13 pts) with a Tables-assisted Body Slam for 14, and gets the Pinfall win when Hardy's 13-card Arsenal comes up blank on Grapple Reversals. Matt seemed to have the match in hand late, hitting yet another of his timely 16-card recovering High Risk combos, and putting D-Von near the end of his tether. Yet D-Von had just enough left in the tank to hit a pair of Tables assisted moves (a Jaw Jammer for a full 10, and the final Body Slam), and pull off the shocking victory over the tournament favorite.

(D-Von PIN Matt Hardy, 48-33) (D-Von clinches Backlash title, owning tiebreakers over both Matt and Christian)

There are four matches left. The schedule is:

Buh-Buh Ray (0-2, -14) vs. Edge (0-2, -14)
Matt Hardy (2-1, 13) vs. Christian (1-1, 3)

Buh-Buh Ray vs. D-Von (3-0, 30)
Edge vs. Christian
